✌🏽 Verbs ending in -car, -gar, and -zar have spelling changes in the first person singular (yo) in the preterite. Notice that the spelling changes preserve the original sound of the infinitive for -car and -gar verbs.

🖖🏾 To talk about how long ago something happened, use the preterite with the following structure:

• Hace + period of time ( + que)
  • Se casaron hace dos años.
  • Hace una hora (que) salió la pareja.
• This structure cannot be used with specific expressions of time, such as ayer, las tres de la tarde or el 8 de abril.

🖐🏻 There are a several ways to ask how long ago something happened. The following questions all translate to How long agodid you meet her?

• ¿Hace cuánto tiempo (que) la conociste?
• ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que la conociste?
• ¿Hace cuánto la conociste?

El imperfecto

• There are no stem-changing verbs in the imperfect.
• All verbs that have changes in the stem in the present or the preterite are regular.
